Adam Krause – Market Hotel Project

Interviews with Photographers July 24, 2013 7:52 am

How did you first hear of the Market Hotel?

I was familiar with the venue for a while, via fallowing the NYC punk scene from a slight distance,. I have a friend who lived in one of the loft spaces with her boyfriend and she filled me in on the upcoming renovations.

What was the atmosphere like, photographing people who now had to move out of their homes?

I found the reaction of the inhabitants a big mixed, In general most of the inhabitants believe in the idea of having an all age music venue and find that very important. With that said, they all seem to enjoy communal living, and the closure of the Market Hotel was a rude awakening, as similar spaces are becoming less common as Brooklyn and Queens become more gentrified.

How long have you been working on this project?

The project was really quick as my contact at the Market Hotel only had a few weeks of a heads up that the renovations were actually happening (they knew it was going to get renovated, but not sure if it would be in 6 months or 6 weeks). All of the photographs were made in about 4 different visits in a span of 2 weeks.
