10 minutes with Stephen Mallon
When did you first know that you wanted to be a photographer?
Maybe when I was 17?
If for some reason you could no longer take pictures, what would you be doing?
Scary question! Why couldn’t I take pictures? Don’t think that will happen.
Can you tell me about your project The Reefing of the USS Radford? How did you get access to take these photos? Is this body of work in any way related to your project Next Stop Atlantic?
This is a continuation of my American reclamation project. I was introduced to American salvage company who reefed the USS Radford via the MTA after following their reefing project for three years. I asked to come down to shoot in the navy yard and from there they invited me to come out on the ship with them when they sank it.
If you could go back ten years and give yourself advice, what would it be?
Don’t worry so much
Any words of wisdom for the up and comers?
Get comfortable w video and video workflow. Start building little crews and get shooting. Photographers are going to need a reel just as much as they need a good web site and print book.
