LOC finds of the day

Historic May 18, 2011 7:59 am

I can’t remember what words I put in to find Grace Spafford’s photo album, but I am grateful to my beloved LOC that they took the time to scan each of the 82-pages. This album includes photos of the American Colony – a Christian community founded in Jerusalem which was founded by immigrants in the United States and Sweden. It includes some amazing shots of Jaffa, Ramallah and Malta, many from 1902. My husband’s family is from a town in Jaffa – Salama – and looking at pictures from the early 1900’s of victorians in their traditional garb makes me think long and hard of the future the area was about to face. I look at the trees and buildings surrounding each shot, wishing I could somehow go back in time and change things, warn people, make peace before war. Anyway, since only yours truly is nutty enough to go through the whole album, I’m posting a few of my favorites.
