Damon Winter and the iPhone

Damon Winter took these shots using his iPhone while shooting the the First Battalion, 87th Infantry of the 10th Mountain Division in northern Afghanistan. I like what he says about using his phone instead of his camera, because I find it true even in social situations how comfortable people are in front of a phone as opposed to a camera so I can only imagine in this case the soldiers would feel at ease around such devices:

“Composing with the iPhone is more casual and less deliberate,” Mr. Winter said. “And the soldiers often take photos of each other with their phones, so they were more comfortable than if I had my regular camera.”

Its also a nice reminder that even without all that fancy gear, you can make great images. See more of Damon’s images and read the rest of the story here.
