10 minutes with Sam Comen

Interviews with Photographers October 19, 2010 4:34 pm

Name: Sam Comen

Location: Los Angeles, born and raised.

Dream subject: Every living Nobel prize winner, the sages and wunderkinds of the internet revolution

Dream location: America’s finest megalopolis: Los Angeles

If cameras all turned to stone I would probably be: A journalist

If I started a magazine, it would be on: Photographic taxonomies of huge sets of people.  I love this and this.

I am inspired by: My parents, The Beatles, Neil Young, Hip Hop, city streets, public transportation, sacred spaces, road trips, open sky, clay, the process of making an object, childlike wonder, August Sander, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Robert Frank, Martin Parr, West Virginia, Brooklyn, Los Feliz, and the Hollywood skyline.

I am discouraged by: The overwhelming sense that there’s just too much to do.

An editor is most helpful when: They’re specific with why they chose you for that particular assignment, and then give you the freedom to apply your approach to that shoot.
