10 minutes with Mark Hartman

Interviews with Photographers October 14, 2010 12:52 pm

Name: Mark Hartman

Location: Lower east side, Manhattan, NY

Dream subject: I have a lot but Nelson Mandela, Kate Moss, Sizzla, Jay-Z, Dali Lamma are a few …

Dream location: I like photographing people most on their home turf, photographing someone in their home / enviornment / community is a dream come true to me. In terms of shooting personal work I am longing to go to India and Africa.

If cameras all turned to stone, I would probably be: A sculpture or a teacher.

If I started a magazine, it would be on: I would want to start a magazine similar to Blind Spot or Aperture, solely showcasing great photography and photo essays.

I am inspired by: Great art, things I see on a daily basis, traveling, beauty, people’s faces, music, finding commonality with all people, my imagination. I find the photography of Nadav Kander, Lars Turnbjork, Pieter Hugo, and Stephen Shore inspiring.

I am discouraged by: When I don’t get responses from emailing.

An editor is most helpful when: When they give you a rough outline of what they expect from you but trust and give you lots of creative freedom to do your job, they let you do your job and expect the best from you. This is how most great photo editors work. Do you tell a chef how to cook?
