Virginia.. Women.. War..

Yesterday Teresa Lewis was executed in Virginia by lethal injection. This has been big in the news for the past week and undoubtedly, will probably be buried and lost within a few days. Most people I am sure read these kinds of stories and despite whatever political view, come up with some semblance of a personal experience that they have had, in a sense to understand why people kill, why humans do the things that we do, why we fight. For instance, without going into the story itself, I think about being a woman, I think about my mom who teaches at a women’s maximum security prison, and how fond of her students she is, and how her time teaching in a prison has made me think harder than ever before about the issues within the prison system, the education system, about abuse and defense.. Then I think about women in war, because the whole concept of war and battles is so male driven. I would like to think that women don’t do bad things, were above all that, but we all know that’s not true. But still, war, prison, death row.. women don’t instantly come to my mind when I of these things and yet here it is all over the news..

Lynsey Addario makes stunning photos and man (truly I should say woman, but it just doesn’t have the same ring to it), she is in it.  Her website is updated regularly with new work and every project she works on, I think, is better than the last. Definitely check out her work here.
