Tribute – Susan Meiselas

Tribute September 22, 2010 1:57 am

As a library and archive intern at Magnum, before everything turned digital (but well into the process) we were still sorting out prints, sending them out, scanning, coding. Spending time in the library was a dream – boxes and boxes of prints, some amazing, some grotesque, some out of focus.. I credit my months at the magnum library for my strong stomach when it comes to looking at those things we find hard to look at. When we had a request and I got to sift through the boxes marked ‘Susan Meiselas’ I was struck by how strong her images were. How, well, macho. In a sea of war prints taken by men it was, to say the least, completely inspiring. Susan’s website has some great audio and short videos (including a bit of her going back to Nicaragua to find the people in some of her most famous photographs, here). Make sure to have your volume up to hear Susan talk about her work.
