tribute: Eugene Richards

Tribute September 18, 2010 11:16 pm

I know the precise moment I knew I wanted to be a photographer.* I was in the Hampshire library trying to get through a paper for an ethnography class. Nothing was happening, I blamed the cubicle I was sitting in and moved to another a few rows down, hoping for some good energy. There was a book already there, it was covered in a thick rubbery dark blue type of fabric. I opened it to the middle and there it was. Eugene Richards Cocaine True, Cocaine Blue and not to be dramatic, but nothing would ever be the same for me again. I spent the next summer interning at Magnum, when Eugene Richards was still at the agency, pretty much entirely for the chance to see him in person. After being there less than an hour I professed as much to my boss, who took the opportunity to hand over some prints that needed to be delivered to his home in Brooklyn. I couldn’t believe it, I had my idols address in my sweaty palms. Standing in their living room, his wife had let me in and told me to wait so that I could meet ‘Gene’, I was speechless, shaking, sweating – a fucking wreck. He came down, shook my hand and I said something incomprehensible and rushed out.. Luckily I redeemed myself a few months later. But anyway, long story short, Eugene Richards is a tremendous photographer and artist.

*OK so things didn’t work out quite the way I had planned, but I’m in the business so it counts for something.. right?
